Westside Training Center Classes

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Cobrinha Westside

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art, sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling, and particularly ground fighting. People who study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu learn that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against someone bigger and stronger via leverage and technique, often taking the fight to the ground and by applying joint locks and choke holds.

At Westside Training Center, we are proud to be an affiliate of multiple time World, Pan Am and ADCC champion Rubens "Cobrinha" CharlesStudents in our fundamentals class learn basic BJJ techniques, and develop core strength. Students of all backgrounds are welcome, and range from those without a sports background and limited athletic ability to Division 1 college athletes. This class is a fun way to learn the basics of BJJ, it will get you into shape, and you will be training in a friendly environment with a fantastic group of people.

Our intermediate/advanced class is a more intense workout, and assumes students already know BJJ basics. Techniques taught in this class are advanced, and cutting edge in the sport.

Thai Kickboxing Students at Westside Training Center

Muay Thai, or "Thai Kickboxing", is sometimes called the "Art of Eight Limbs" because it teaches strikes with punches, kicks, knees, and elbows.  It is often referred to as the "most effective" striking sport as the punches & kicks delivered are more powerful than any other martial art.  A typical Thai Kickboxing class consists of a warm-up, cardio/body-weight exercises, and punching/kicking/knee/elbow combinations with padwork.

Benefits of Thai Kickboxing:

  • Total body conditioning
  • Increased strength and power
  • Increased core stability and muscular endurance
  • Enhanced coordination and balance
  • Increase metabolic demands and caloric expenditure

Youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (ages 7-13)

Youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Our Youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program provides all the benefits of adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but is geared towards youth/young adults.  Our program emphasizes safety, respect, discipline, and is open to students of all athletic abilities.  Our curriculum focuses on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but also includes elements of other martial arts, such as wrestling and judo, to ensure students are confident and "bully proof".

While not from our academy, this girl is a great ambassador for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

Girls Pulling Guard

Our curriculum focuses on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, however, we incorporate the best elements of other martial arts as well to ensure your child has confidence to defend themselves.  While not from our academy, this little girl is a great ambassador for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

Catch Wrestling

Catch wrestling is similar to the type of amateur wrestling found in schools and colleges, and also similar to Olympic freestyle wrestling, however, the key difference is that catch wrestling allows for submissions or "catches" in addition to pins.  The name "catch wrestling" derives from a British term "catch as catch can" meaning, "catch a hold anywhere you can".

Catch wrestling has become more popular lately as MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes are using catch wrestling to gain an upper hand on the competition, in fact, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rubens Charles "Cobrinha" recently said, on winning the 2017 ADCC championship, "My jiu jitsu is getting better because of wrestling."  He did not have a single point scored against him the entire ADCC (no-gi) tournament.

Sanda

Sanda, or Chinese boxing (also known as Sanshou) is a highly versatile martial art/combat sport originally developed by the Chinese military that combines full contact kickboxing, punching, takedowns and throws.  In a sense, it is the Chinese version of Mixed Martial Arts, only it has been around for a lot longer.  In fact, Sanda practitioners have had much success when competing in MMA events, and has been growing in popularity in the United States because of this.

Westside Training Center is proud to host periodic "6-Week Challenge" classes which combine fitness, self defense, and basic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. These classes are a great way to transform your body by reducing fat and increasing lean muscle mass. You will be pushed. Are you ready for the challenge?
