From Ram Ananda's GracieMag article:
"Ram Ananda of Cobrinha BJJ is proof that age is just a number. At 36 years young, he won the brown belt light-featherweight division at the 2014 World Championship–his second adult world title. Ram has been training for five and a half years and has been training full-time under Rubens Charles Cobrinha for three and a half years. In that time he won the 2012 Worlds at blue belt, the 2012 Master and Seniors Worlds at purple belt, the 2013 Masters and Seniors Worlds at brown belt and now the 2014 Worlds at brown belt. His ability to toggle back and forth between adult and master and produce the same results shows that the right mentality is what produces results."
Ram's competition success has continued with a recent Abu Dhabi gold in the black belt division, and a gold medal in the 2018 IBJJF Manila Open.
Dr. Raul Ramirez, Westside Training Center's Catch Wrestling and Sanda instructor, has been a life-long devotee to combat-oriented martial arts. His fascinating background was recently chronicled in an interview with Embodied Strength:
...a Licensed Acupuncturist based in Culver City, Los Angeles, Dr. Ramirez translated most of the oldest Acupuncture textbooks in existence, the Huang Di Nei Jing. Later he wrote a dissertation on the treatment of inflammatory disorders using the protocols described therein. This work earned him a Ph.D. in Eastern Medicine.
In addition to his work in Traditional Eastern Medicine, Dr. Ramirez has devoted a great deal of his life to martial arts. He has studied Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing and Wrestling) in Bejing, China and Bangau Putih Silat in Bali, Indonesia. He is also well studied in the internal martial arts of Ying Yang Palm and Liu He Ba Fa. Additionally he has experience in Sumo Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Catch Wrestling.
The kickboxing and wrestling styles that Raul teaches (Sanda/Catch) are ideal for MMA athletes, and for self defense. We are lucky to have him at Westside! His notable accomplishments include:
- 2002, 2003, USA National Champion Full Contact Sanda Kickboxing,
- 2002 USA International Sumo Open, Silver Medal, Middle Weight Division,
- 2012, 2013 International Champion, Snake Pit Wigan International Catch Wrestling Tournament
Raul was recently interviewed on the "No Holds Barred" podcast on 1/25/2018.
